There are an entire slew of games available for cell phones ranging from basic games such as pool to more advanced games like baseball. There hasn’t been any games made for cell phones from the big boys such as Microsoft, EA or the others, until now. ARM, a mobile chip maker, says that we will soon be able to have Xbox quality gameplay available on cell phones.
The new ARM Mali-200 and Mali-400 processors will be released around later this year with full integration in emails soon afterwards. The company has already ported Project Gotham Racer to work with their new processors. ARM is saying, “Performance-wise, it runs like the original Xbox, but feature-wise it looks like an Xbox 360 title.” If that’s the case, count me in!
The speed of the processor will be quite impressive. ARM says the mobile processors will be available in quad-core running at 300MHZ. There’s no confirmation yet which phones will be getting the processor. All I know is that when it does come out mobile gaming will never be the same!
I remember when I was a kid I was into toys such as He-Man and GI Joe, boy have times changed. The kid in the video below is seriously addicted to his dad’s iPhone. So addicted in fact that he cries when he doesn’t have it in his hands. I wonder if the first words out of his mouth were iPhone? And you thought Joe the Camel was targeted to under age kids.
Laminar Research has created a game for the iPhone which simulates the US Airways landing in the Hudson River. As you remember the famous pilot, Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, landed the plane in the river on January 15th and everyone survived. Laminar Research now lets users become Sully and land the plane in the Hudson.
In the game you start out on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport. You take off and follow rectangular hoops which simulate the exact path the plane took. You get the actual air traffic communication between Sully and air traffic control. The game developer tried to keep everything as realistic as possible.
I’m really not sure how this game ranks on the tasteless scale. On one hand you can say this game is totally tasteless do to the possible nature of what could have happened that January day. On the other had you can “claim” it’s just another simulation game. I’ll let you guys be the judge.
If you’re interested in playing the game it’s available in the iTunes store for $0.99.
As cell phone technology increases, developers are developing more and more innovative mobile games. Instead of the standard controller concept, developers are taking advantage of all the technology available. This includes the use of the cell phone keys, but also accelerometers and cameras. MooLan is such a game that was developed on the Symbian platform. You can see the game in action below.
“The Moolan mobile game is the phenomenal result of the idea to combine as many features of a modern cell phone as possible in one application. It uses most of the new sensors which are built into your mobile device, as well as the front camera.
The main Goal of this exciting game is to stay clear of land and fly your own little space shuttle trough dangerous levels. Over four different planets are ready to be explored. But it’s not easy at all. Master this under time pressure, and break the highscore without crashing into the surroundings.
Steer with the accelerometer by tilting your phone left or right, fuel your tank through shaking your phone. Accelerate by holding your palm over the new proximity sensor of the Nokia 5800 (S60 5th Ed) or the front camera (S60 3rd Ed). You can play wherever you are and whenever you want, but don’t be surprised by the wondering faces around you while watching you playing.”

“The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge has demonstrated the huge potential of this industry on a global level, and the innovation that can be applied to mobile games,” said Dr Mark Ollila, director of games publishing, Nokia. “We’ve seen some groundbreaking ideas and some really unique concepts. It just goes to show how many creative minds there are out there and it really looks like we’re going to set out what we wanted to achieve with this Challenge – to rock the industry. Everyone’s now talking about the awards ceremony and we’re looking forward to an exciting outcome.”
The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge, launched in April 2008, is designed to encourage the development of innovative game concepts with the power to positively disrupt the global mobile gaming industry and to help propel mobile gaming with handheld devices into a new and exciting future.
The Mobile Games Innovation Challenge, sponsored by Nokia Games Publishing, called for mobile game developers to submit concepts that will help drive mobile gaming to the next level, relying on the advanced features and functionalities of N-Gage-compatible devices, and Java- or Symbian-based Series 40 or S60 devices from Nokia.
If you have a N-Gage enabled Nokia device and you’re tired of seeing all the games for the iPhone coming out hopefully the contest winners will have some innovative games.
