Sprint might not have the best cell phones on the market, but they sure do get it when it comes to plans. Sprint was the first to offer a flat rate $99 for texting, surfing the net and minutes. Now Sprint is moving beyond the popular mobile-to-mobile in network and “friends” plans which so many carriers have adopted. Sprint announced today they will let their customers call any mobile phone on any carrier without incurring additional charges. The plan is called Any Mobile, Anytime. Now this is what I’m talking about! Hopefully the other carriers will follow suite. As I’ve said in the past it’s becoming more and more about the phone and less about the carrier. The only way carriers will survive is to allow their customers to break out of in network calling. Here’s what Sprint says about the plan:

“Simply Everything and Ready Now were Sprint innovations to make wireless simpler and more worry-free for our customers,” said Dan Hesse, Sprint’s CEO. “We don’t think our customers want to have to keep track of or only talk to friends, colleagues or family members who make the same choices they do. Any Mobile, Anytime provides unprecedented simplicity and value, so much that many more customers can now consider cutting the cord altogether.”

Palm has sent a cease and desist letter to the developer of the Palm Pre theme for Android to stop selling the theme. I understand that Palm wants to cover their trademark, but I think this is hilarious. If anyone should be mad it should be T-Mobile, Google and HTC. This is basically a free way for Palm to show off the look of their webOS. If I were Palm I would thank the developer for making the theme and ask if they could make the same thing for the iPhone! Come on Palm, don’t get upset because the G1 has sold over a million units. Embrace the help.

Nokia and Microsoft have both announced that they will be holding a joint new conference in the near future? What is the news conference going to be about you may ask.  No, it’s not that Nokia and Microsoft will be joining forces to create a Microsoft cell phone.  They will be joining forces to offer Microsoft Office on Nokia’s Symbian run cell phones. The full range of Microsoft Office products have traditionally only run on Windows enabled phones. Microsoft is looking to increase their market share by extending their software to other mobile OS platforms.

Update: the current cause is a “denial-of-service attack” which is defined as an attempt to make a computer resource unavailable to its intended users. Basically some hacker(s) have a big smile on their face for this sinister accomplishment.

Today’s the big day for T-Mobile customers (and potential customers). The highly anticipated upgrade for the G1, the myTouch 3G will be available at T-Mobile stores throughout the country today. The price is $199.99 with a new 2 year contract. I currently have the G1 and I’m dying to pick-up the myTouch 3G. I just don’t want to pay the full price. T-Mobile, can you show me some love and hook me up?

If you’re picking up the myTouch 3G today let us all know how you like it. I’m guessing it’s going to be a fan favorite for T-Mobile customers.

After many months of ups and downs the trendycellular.com site redesign is finally live. I won’t go into the details, but trust me the entire effort took much longer than expected. That’s in the past now. As you can see trendycellular has gone through an extreme makeover. The site is much “cleaner” and easier to use. One of the biggest changes is that I’ve decided to get rid of the tabs in the cell phone pages and bring all the content out onto one page. Other big changes include a revamp of the user reviews section and the question and answer sections. Both sections are much easier to use. The list of changes and updates are too large to list here so go ahead and browse around and find all the awesome updates!

Last night I saw a U.S. Cellular commercial about swapping your old cell phone battery for a new one without paying. This is what I call competition at it’s best! The more cell phone carriers there are the more they compete for our business. Over time if one carrier makes a major decision and it attracts customers others will follow. Therefore, maybe we’ll see the other carriers adopt the free battery swap approach. There’s nothing worse than your battery dying and your carrier telling you that you have to pay for another one. I guess the Palm Pre hasn’t given Sprint the boost it was expecting. Instead Sprint is reportedly down 257,000 customers in the second quarter of this year. Not a good sign at all. The downward slide for Sprint continues. It’s really a shame. I remember when Sprint was the king of the hill. I still blame the skid on poor phone choices. How many “killer” phones can you say Sprint had first? For the most part Sprint is the 2nd or 3rd company to get popular phones. By the time Sprint offers the phone their customers have already jumped to the other carrier to get the phone first. Maybe Sprint will get their mojo back someday. Not to be a snob but look at their website. It really doesn’t scream we’re a cutting edge company. I think Sprint needs an extreme makeover.
